Press on the tiny soccer ball located on the bottom right corner of any YouTube video and you’ll be greeted with the sound of the vuvuzelas, and possibly prompted to bang your head against the surface of your desk.

Invention ≠ Innovation
Remember this guy?
Yesterday I went to the MSC Leadership Talk Series 2010 where Bob Borchers was giving a talk on How Companies can Innovate like Apple. So Bob Borchers is the guy that u can see in the Introduction to iPhone videos (like the one I posted above) and probably the voice behind the first few iPhone ads (where you can see a hand holding an iPhone) . Actually Bob Borchers served as senior director of worldwide iPhone product marketing and now he’s a General Partner at Opus Capital.
During the talk Bob Borchers has shared 4 important rules of innovation that he could summarize up over the years with other big companies like Nike, Nokia, Apple and now, Opus:-
1) Being the 1st and being the best is overrated
2) Change the rules
3) Obvious benefit
4) Once is not enough
Being the 1st and being the best is overrated
Bob said that you don’t always need to be the first in the market to be a game changer. For example, The Newton was actually the first PDA but it didn’t get much traction. It promised to do so many things but delivered non of them well. Palm on the other hand came in later, delivered less, but delivered them in a great way and, no prize for guessing it right, Palm went on the lead the PDA market until about 5 years ago.
Even iPhone too was not the first phone to have a touch screen, Internet connection, email, music playing capabilities and all, and it couldn’t do a lot of things that other phones could do. So it was not the first, neither was it the best in terms of features. But for everything that it delivered, it does it great.
Change the rules
FedEx for instance had to change and break many rules and in fact had some laws changed in order to allow them to do business. FYI there was a time when FedEx was running low on cash (during the start up) and the CEO went to Las Vegas to gamble the money he had. The winnings was immediately wired to pay salaries to FedEx staff.
For iPhone, they changed the way people interact with phones. The rule before that was for touch screen you’ll have to use a stylus to interact with it. But the iPhone changed all that and now you can interact with your finger via multi-touch.
Obvious benefit
This rule may seem obvious, why would anyone develop something that doesn’t have any benefit. The problem with most products in the market is that the focus is mostly on the technology; how much memory it has, how fast the processor is etc. But far less on what the user can do with it. All iPhone ads do not highlight any of the technical feature.
Everything is about the user and what he/she can do with it. So forget about the technology for moment, and think how can your product benefit the users and highlight it. (It’s not how thick or thin it is, or how small or big the phone is. But it’s about how it affects your daily life and what it does to you).
Once is not enough
The fourth and final rule is that, once is not enough. You need to continue to innovate and compete with yourself. You should be your fiercest competitor. Motorola was the leader in the mobile phone market in the early 90’s. But they stopped innovating and by the end of the 90’s they were overtaken by Nokia and was left in the dust. It just proves that being innovative once is just never enough. You need to continue challenging yourself and come up with more and more innovative products. And in doing so, you must be willing to fail. And the culture at Apple is that they are so willing to try and innovate and fail at it that for every 1 product that ships out, there are probably 4 or 5 that didn’t make it.
So these are the 4 innovation rules by Bob Borchers. It was a very interesting and informative event and I wish I will have more of this kind of opportunity in the future. Oh yeah, thanks to my boss for inviting.
ps: Personally I think those 4 rules of innovation do concern the way you do your work (inside or outside the business world) and it can actually be applied in your personal life.

alhamdulillah, hari ni dah masuk 2 hari saya di kelantan dan rasanya sekarang kelantan tak sepanas sebelum ni.
semalam hujan. dapat tidur nyenyak.

Randomness IV
1. Sekarang ni saya dalam proses memindahkan file-file dari hosting lama ke hosting baru.
2. Antara sebab bertukar ke hosting baru: sebab saya nak ambik package lagi murah dengan disk space yang lagi besar. dan satu lagi kerana saya kecewa dengan webhosting lama sebab diorang buang fantastico dari cpanel. kebetulan saya pula sangat noob untuk meng-install wordpress secara manual, jadi saya rasa sangat keciwa kerana terpaksa pakai WP free untuk buat beberapa assignment walaupun mempunyai hosting sendiri.
3. Namun, beberapa hari selepas saya memberi alasan itu kepada mereka, mereka pun letak balik fantastico dekat cpanel. ha ha grrreat. Namun sudah terlambat. Tapi sebenarnya lain-lain servis mereka adalah bagus. (ayat untuk mengelak dari disoal siasat dengan lebih lanjut). sekianterimakasih.
4. Baiklah mari menukar topik. Hari Isnin minggu lepas saya dan mak saya terserempak dengan anjing betina kat tepi jalan tengah bersihkan anak kucing. Sangat comel ok. Kemudian dia mintak-mintak makanan dari orang lalu lalang.
Jadi, saya dan mak bagi mereka makan lalu anjing itu menggoyang-goyangkan ekor dia dengan comel sekali. Kata saya dalam hati dengan terharu sekali, benarlah kucing dengan anjing sudah berbaik-baik zaman sekarang. *AAaaaaaa~~~ awan terbuka dan langit cerah*
5. Beberapa hari berikutnya, selepas subuh saya dikejutkan dengan bunyi anjing menyalak dengan kuat sekali bersama suara binatang lain yang bunyi seakan-akan monyet yang menjerit kesakitan. saya sangkakan monyetlah. yaa, mmu mana ada monyet.
jadi, saya bergegas ke tingkap dan saya tengok ada 4 ekor anjing tengah gigit kucing yang selalu saya tegur sebelum pegi kelas dan mereka menggigit dan menarik-narik beliau dengan gigi dengan ganas sekali sambil menyalak-nyalak dan 2 ekor lagi anjing tengah menyalak di belakang. ~_~ (fuh, ayat satu nafas).
kemudian saya tengok pak gad berlari-lari menghalau anjing anjing, pada awalnya dia pun dalam ketakutan juga. tapi mungkin sebab dah tak tahan tengok kucing tu kena gigit, jadi dia beranikan diri dengan membaling batu dari jauh. mereka menyalak makin kuat. saya di tingkap bilik dah ketakutan sbb saya takut mereka gigit pakgad tu. kemudian selepas pakgad datang dan menghayun-hayun paperbag-nya, anjing-anjing pun lari dan kucing itu mati beberapa jam selepas itu.
selepas melihat kejadian itu saya terus trauma untuk beberapa hari. auuuuuuuh. T_T
6. kadang-kadang saya tak suka jadi leader. tapi selalunya kena jadi leader. dari zaman sekolah rendah lagi. entah kenapa. kalau jadi leader, saya rasa saya bukan a good leader pun. tsk. kadang-kadang rasa susah hati. tapi go on sajaaaa sambil cuba buat yang terbaik.
7. setelah sekian lama saya menunggu satu parcel iaitu dari September 2009, akhirnya saya dapat parcel itu pada 10/02/10.
Yaaa.. 5 bulan ok. saya sudah putus harapan dan ingat benda tu hilang di tengah jalan. tapi bila cek track number, memang dah sampai MMU. tapi bila tanya MMU, diorang cakap takde. beberapa kali saya suruh diorang cek, tapi tak jumpa. marahlah saya.
jadi sekarang bila dah dapat, tengok-tengok, oh patutlaa.. mungkin sebab nama sender duduk kat tengah-tengah sampul dan nama penerima duduk kat ceruk bawah, jadi pihak MMU tak tengok elok-elok lalu mereka tak perasan. T_T
lagi satu hal, phone number pun salah. aiyokkk.
takpelah, janji dah sampai walaupun selepas 5 bulan. T_T
8. Oh semalam saya pegi tengok orang buat batik untuk assignment.
sambil-sambil tu dapat juga cuba lukis batik. seronok lah.
9. Ya, saya suka post entry panjang-panjang
10. Saya tengok citarasa foreigner adalah sungguh pelik. ha ha
11. Besok ada submission DM, dan ada presentation MPM. insyaAllah dah prepare. ameeeen.
12. Dan akhir sekali yang paling special, 23hb Feb adalah hari lahir kakak saya. Happy Birthday, and may Allah bless you alwayssssss my dear sisterrrr. muahhh. :x :x :x
